Bongo Help

This help section contains 11 parts:

  1. Help on Help
  2. Commands and Shortcuts
  3. Keypads and Keyboards
  4. Game Overview
  5. Paddle Control
  6. Paddle Size
  7. Ball Speed
  8. Winning
  9. Number of Players
  10. Playing with Friends
  11. Sending Messages

1. Help on Help

Use the UP and DOWN scroll keys to scroll up and down by one line. Use the numbers 1 and 7 keys to scroll up and down by a full page. Use the LEFT key to jump to the top of help, and the RIGHT key to jump to the bottom.

2. Commands and Shortcuts

You tell bongo what to do by giving commands. A menu of commands is presented when you press the OPTIONS key on your phone. It looks like this:

About
1 - New Game
2 - Pause
3 - Play
4 - Setup
5 - Connect
6 - Disconnect
7 - Make Teams
* - Send Message
Help

You can issue a command by pressing the OPTIONS key and then selecting a command. All of the commands (except About and Help) can also be given by pressing a single key, the one listed with the command. For example, you can give the Setup command by pressing the 4 key. You know this because the Setup command appears in the Options menu like this:

4 - Setup

Of course, if you don't remember which key to press for a command, you can always use the Options menu.

3. Keypads and Keyboards

If your phone has a traditional 12-key keypad, laid out like this,

1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
* 0 #

you may skip this section. If, however, your phone has a full keyboard it may not be easy to type commands to Bongo.

On most phones with keyboards, to type a number you must press a 'shift' key and then a letter. This is not convenient while playing Bongo. Here's what you can do: in the SETUP option, scroll to the very bottom and find a field labeled:

123456789*0#

You can type 12 letters into the field. The first letter you type will be 'translated' into '1'. The second letter will 'translate to '2' and so on. On most (but not all) Nokia phones with keyboards, the '1' is on the 'r' key, the '2' is on the 't' key, etc. So, on these phones you should enter this sequence of letters into the field:

rtyfghvbnumj

so that the letters (left column below) will be treated like the keys (right column below) on a traditional keypad:

r 1
t 2
y 3
f 4
g 5
h 6
v 7
b 8
n 9
u *
m 0
j #

Of course, your keyboard may be different, so you may need to type a different sequence of letters into the field.

4. Game Overview

Bongo allows 2, 3 or 4 players. At least one player must be human. All non-human players are controlled by the computer in the phone. Each human player controls exactly one paddle. Computer controlled paddles are always shown in black. Human controlled paddles are shown in other colors. Each paddle 'defends' one of the four sides (left, right, top or bottom) of the screen.

When play begins, all players have 0 points and a red ball begins moving toward one side of the screen. Each players tries to move her paddle to block the ball from reaching the side of the screen she defends. If a player fails to block the ball, and it reaches the edge of the screen, then all players—except the player defending that side—get one point. The game ends when a player has enough points to win.

5. Paddle Control

Use the scroll keys to move your paddle. The UP and DOWN keys move the paddle upward and downward. The LEFT and RIGHT keys also move the paddle upward and downward, but in smaller steps. Press a scroll key once to move the paddle a single step, or hold it down to move the paddle multiple steps.

Within the SETUP option you can specify a value for PADDLE MOVE (BIG). Smaller values tell Bongo to move the paddle a smaller distance when you press the UP and DOWN keys. Larger values tell Bongo to move the paddle a larger distance when you press UP and DOWN.

Similarly, changing the PADDLE MOVE (SMALL) value in SETUP will adjust the distance your paddle moves when you press the LEFT and RIGHT scroll keys.

If you find that Bongo moves the paddle more than once when you press a scroll key, go to SETUP and reduce the PADDLE SENSITIVITY value.

Normally, the paddle you control will be the one on the left side of your screen. If you prefer to see your paddle on the right side of your screen enter SETUP and set DEFEND to RIGHT SIDE .

6. Paddle Size

In SETUP you can specify PADDLE SIZE. The larger the paddle size the bigger the paddles and vice versa. If PADDLE SIZE is very small the game is very difficult. If PADDLE SIZE is very large the game is too easy. A PADDLE SIZE of 20 works well.

7. Ball Speed

The speed of the ball during play varies. It depends on the starting speed and how the players strike the ball. The overall speed can be raised or lowered by entering SETUP and changing BALL DELAY. A smaller value for BALL DELAY speeds the game up, while a larger value for BALL DELAY slows the game down. A BALL DELAY of 40 - 60 works well.

Values of 20 and less make the game very difficult for humans.

8. Winning

Normally, the first player to score 11 points wins the game. In SETUP you can change the value of POINTS IN GAME as you wish.

Normally, a player must win by 2 points (or more). So, if the score is tied at 10 points each, the game will continue until 12 points. If you prefer to allow a player to win by only 1 point, enter SETUP and change the value of MUST WIN BY 2 to NO .

9. Number of Players

In SETUP you can set NUMBER OF PLAYER to 1 - 2 or 1 - 4 . When 1 - 2 is selected only two paddles will be displayed: one on the left, and one on the right side of the screen. When 1 - 4 is selected four paddles will be displayed, one on each side (left, right, top, bottom) of the screen.

10. Playing With Friends

You can play against your friends. Up to four people can play at once. Here are the requirements:

  1. each player must have a phone (one player per phone)
  2. each phone must turn on Bluetooth and make itself visible. Consult your phone manual for more information on Bluetooth
  3. each player MUST have Bongo installed on her phone
  4. each player should use the SETUP option and enter her name in the YOUR BONGO NAME area
  5. one—and ONLY ONE—of the four players must enter SETUP and set ROLE to LEADER . All other players must enter SETUP and set ROLE to FOLLOWER .
  6. all players must enter SETUP and set Group IDto the same value ( 0 is fine).

Each player must join the game by connecting with the Leader. To make a connection the Leader and the Follower must each choose the CONNECT option. It usually takes about 12 - 20 seconds for two phones to make a connection.

If the Follower fails to connect to the Leader, the Follower should leave the CONNECT mode, and then choose the CONNECT option again to retry.

For each game, game settings from the Leader are sent to all Followers. The settings include:

  1. number of points needed to win
  2. whether player must win by 2
  3. speed of ball
  4. size of paddles

11. Sending Messages

Players can send messages to other players to compliment and encourage them, show respect, build their self esteem, and cheer them on.

In SETUP you can store up to 5 messages in the MESSAGE 1 to MESSAGE 5 fields. To send a message press the * key followed by the number key of the message. For example, type *2 to send the message stored in field MESSAGE 2.
